A virally circulating ‘sponsored’ Facebook post is part of a phishing scam trying to extract money, personal and bank card information.
The scam post, which has been online for a while and was forwarded to Namibia Fact Check in August 2025, claims that the exceedingly low price of the PlayStation 5 consoles on sale was due to having to clear out old stock and to avoid supplier penalties. (See image below for full text)
In the scam post, social media users are enticed to click on a link where they can “Grab the last discounted pieces”.
Once clicked on, the link directs users to a webpage to claim the alleged prize, which requires users to answer a few questions after which the page declares “CONGRATULATIONS!” and presents the user as “selected” to receive the prize, while also requesting a N$36 payment for shipping by inserting their card details. The Facts
The post has all the tell-tale signs of being a scam post, specifically an over-the-top promotion and an in-post URL that does not link to an official Game Stores Namibia webpage. Other evident signs are poor grammar and sentence construction and contradictory statements (New PS 5 consoles that are also old and no longer under manufacturer warranty).
This post is a classic phishing and advance-fee scheme designed to lure users into a fraudulent transaction by mimicking a trusted brand and offering an irrationally low price.
A thorough review of Game Namibia’s official website (game.co.na) and its verified social media pages reveals that no such promotion happened at any time in 2025. Namibia Fact Check also contacted the Game Namibia head office in early August 2025 to find out about a PlayStation 5 sale promotion, to which the response was that no such promotion existed.
Following Namibia Fact Check‘s initial approach in August 2025, Game Namibia has repeatedly posted the following scam alert on its Facebook feed. (See image below)
Accompanying the scam alert post from early August 2025 are comments from social media users referring specifically to the N$36 PS 5 console promotion scam. (See image below)
Our Verdict
There was no promotion run by Game Stores Namibia in 2025 in which PlayStation 5 consoles could be bought or won for the low price or cost of N$36. The statements in the ‘sponsored’ Facebook post are thus clearly FALSE.
Namibian social media users are cautioned to not click on links in suspicious posts promising very low prices or irrational prizes, as these are very often part of phishing scams.
