Fake meal promotions on social media are used to scam people into giving up their personal information online
Cyber criminals are now using fake fast food promotions to trick people into revealing their personal information.
This scam came to light recently when a phishing scam masked as a Steers promotion was brought to the attention of Namibia Fact Check.
The scam is being perpetrated through a Facebook page titled Steers Delivery, which appears to have been created on 22 November 2023, and promotes three cheap fast food meal options that come with free delivery.
The Facebook page, with only 29 follows, contains only three posts to date, all with the same text:
“🌭 Hungry? 🍔
🤩 There’s a great promotion for you! 🍗 Choose one combo and order at a low price 🥳
🚀 Free delivery 🔥
👇 Order now because the offer is limited! 👇”
A link through which customers can place their Steers order is provided in each of the posts.
Phishing Scam
The link that is provided in all three posts for the order redirects the customer to a fake Steers webpage.
The webpage acknowledges the customer for taking part in the promotion and then states that they can get one of the three combos mentioned on the Facebook page for a mere N$55.
The webpage requires the customer to answer three questions that prove that they are a real person. Upon answering the questions the customer is requested to choose one of the gift boxes on the screen (image below).
When the customer supposedly chooses the correct box they win and are then required to enter their personal information into an electronic form.
Steers Response
On 4 December 2023, Steers South Africa labeled the Steers Delivery Facebook page and the meal promotions “Fake” on its social media feeds.
Around the same date, Steers Namibia also issued the following statement (image below) on social media:
“Steersnamibia) Eyy fam, be on the lookout!
Someone’s trying to be us and talk like us!
Do not accept or partake in any posts from the Steers Delivery page &
You know we keep it vibin’ with just Steers Namibia as the official page and we don’t have any other page!”
